Swiss Junior Hockey Team Takes on Niagara Falls

Approximately 40 junior hockey players from Switzerland and their coaching staff toured the Niagara Falls State Park on Wednesday, giving them some much needed relaxation and an icy view of a world renowned attraction.

The players visited the observation tower, caught an up-close view of Niagara Falls from Prospect Point, and were able to tour the park at their leisure.

The Swiss junior hockey team is in the Buffalo and Niagara areas until Tuesday for the World Junior Hockey Championships.

Local Basketball Player Goes From Redshirt to Major Contributor at Michigan

Hamburg resident Blake McLimans was redshirted at Michigan last season so he could learn more about what it takes to succeed at the Division I level. This year, it’s a different story.

McLimans, a 6-foot 10-inch, 240-pound forward who wears number 22 for the Michigan Wolverines, spent his off-season training at Primordial Strength Inc. in East Aurora with Steven Helmicki, president of the local fitness training company. Today, McLimans is a big contributor to his 10-2 team, averaging 7.7 minutes, 1.9 points and 1.3 rebounds per game.

Just Announced: The French Connection to Appear at HockeyTowneUSA Fan Fest

The French Connection — Gilbert Perreault, Rene Robert and Richard Martin — will be appearing December 26 and 27 at HockeyTowneUSA Fan Fest in the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center.

HockeyTowneUSA Fan Fest is being held December 26-29 and is sponsored by Towne Automotive Group, Certo Brothers Distributing Company and Sgroi Financial LLC, in association with WNY Hockey Magazine. Hockey fans from Western New York, Southern Ontario and around the world will also be in downtown Buffalo during this time for the World Junior hockey tournament.

Primordial Strength Inc. of East Aurora is looking for community support in its effort to bring Chris Nowinski of the Sports Legacy Institute to Buffalo for a speaking engagement in early spring. Nowinski, president, CEO and co-director of the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy at the Boston University School of Medicine, is also the author of “Head Games: Football’s Concussion Crisis.”

Marine Functional Force Training, developed locally by Steven Helmicki of East Aurora, president of Primordial Strength Inc., is featured in the December issue of MILO: A Journal For Serious Strength Athletes. Former Lancaster resident Len Kuhn, now manager of Area 4 Gym at Camp Lejune, a Marine Corps military training facility in North Carolina, is photographed in the feature.

Primordial’s Marine Functional Force Training program was specially created to meet the needs of our fighting men and women who train at Area 4.

Niagara Wheatfield and Newfane Picked Teams of the 1990’s

Niagara Wheatfield and Newfane high schools have been selected as the varsity wrestling “Team’s of the 1990’s” in their respective divisions by the “Teams of the Decades” Committee.

The committee was created in 2009 to research and select the teams of the past six decades and members include Section Six Wrestling Hall of Fame coaches Walt Thurnau (Southwestern), and Dick Lange (Roy-Hart & Newfane). Members also include Niagara County Community College coach Eric Knuutila, an inductee of several national, state and local wrestling Halls of Fame and Bob Koshinski, Chairman of the Ilio DiPaolo Wrestling Scholarship Committee.

HockeyTowneUSA Fan Fest Coming to Downtown Buffalo

The world is coming to Buffalo ... and we’re throwing a party!

HockeyTowne USA Fan Fest, four days of fun for kids, moms, dads and hockey enthusiasts, is coming to the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center in downtown Buffalo December 26-29. Admission is just $5 per person, and children 12 and under are free with a paid adult admission.

A private VIP party featuring The Boys of Summer will be held on Sunday, December 26. HockeyTowne USA Fan Fest will then open to the public from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, December 27 and Tuesday, December 28, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
