Study Claims Sale of Wine in Grocery Stores Could Add 6,000 Jobs

New Yorkers for Economic Growth and Open Markets released a study today analyzing the potential economic and fiscal impact of allowing consumers to buy wine in grocery stores that currently sell beer.   The study claims that the proposal would raise hundreds of millions of dollars through franchise fees for grocery stores, raise $71.1 million annually through sales taxes on additional consumption and create over 6,000 net new jobs in wineries and related industries and the retail and wholesale industries.

The study was released by New Yorkers for Economic Growth and Open Markets.  The group is urging the Legislature to allow consumers to buy wine in grocery stores where they can buy beer and loosen restrictions on what liquor stores can sell.

Many winery and grape growers are in favor of the measure.
