Niagara University Again Offers Free Tax Preparation Assistance

Niagara University Again Offers Free Tax Preparation Assistance

Continuing a tradition that has become nearly as inevitable as taxes themselves, accounting students from Niagara University's College of Business Administration will again provide free tax preparation assistance to members of the Niagara Falls community this tax season.

Sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service, the program, called Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), is entering its 30th year at Niagara. Under the program, NU students prepare and electronically file federal and state tax returns free of charge for elderly and low-income taxpayers in the community. The program is coordinated by members of Beta Alpha Psi, the international honor society for accounting, and the college's Accounting Society.

“VITA is yet another way that Niagara University strives to provide a meaningful service to its fellow community members, especially the less fortunate,” said Alfonso Oddo, a professor of accounting at the university.

Getting the Green Light Series to Focus on NU Sustainability Topics

Not many people know that Niagara University has a dedicated funding source that enables the university to purchase recycling bins, rain barrels and other sustainability-enhancing products. Or that all of the new and renovated buildings on the university’s campus were constructed to meet LEED specifications. Some may not have realized that Niagara has planted over 200 new trees on Monteagle Ridge within the last three years.

They will now.

Getting the Green Light, a recurring series of online videos intended to highlight Niagara University’s sustainability efforts, will appear periodically on the university website and its social networking sites.

Niagara University Students Head to Dallas for a ‘Super’ Learning Experience

Niagara University Students Head to Dallas for a ‘Super’ Learning Experience

Niagara University is sending a team of 11 to Dallas for Super Bowl XLV but they won’t be suiting up against the Steelers or Packers. Instead, the students from NU's College of Hospitality and Tourism Management will get a first-hand look at what goes into organizing one of the world's largest sporting events.

The group departed from Buffalo on Feb. 1 to volunteer at a series of events associated with the National Football League’s Super Bowl, which will pit two of the league’s premier franchises against each other when the Green Bay Packers take on the Pittsburgh Steelers on Feb. 6. During the eight-day trip, NU students will greet visitors, host a media party and take a few shifts at the NFL Experience, the league’s interactive theme park, among several other activities as requested by organizers.
