Niagara Wheatfield Boys Soccer Team Rising to the Top | Schools
“It has been a bit of a surprise,” says Boys Varsity Soccer Coach John Coulter. He is talking about the Falcons who are currently in 3rd place in the NFL (Niagara Frontier League) and 4th in all of Section VI. “In previous years we have done well. Two years ago we were undefeated up until the middle of the season. So it really nice that this team that consists of mainly young players has been able to be so impressive.”
When Coulter, who has been coaching the team for the last seven years, saw his roster he knew he had three strong players. “I knew we had a strong core of players with Nick Johnson and Jeff Calkins who were returning as seniors, as well as Tom ModicaAmore and Francesco Strangio as juniors. However, we had a lot of younger players with two freshmen and three sophomores so it was hard to predict how it was going to go.” What he thinks has really been the key to their success is the fact that the seniors have turned themselves into mentors for their younger teammates. “They have given them that guidance on what to expect and how to approach the game. As a younger team this will definitely help them to get better each game and to grow as players. “
Another reason the team is doing so well is that they have a coach whose love of the game is inspirational. “I have been a soccer player my whole life and every day I am out on that field with the guys. And every year it gets harder and harder to keep up with them,” he laughs. “But that doesn’t stop me.”
The team is also hoping to become unstoppable. They are approaching the sectionals and are getting ready to face off against their archrivals from North Tonawanda. “It is going to be a huge game and every former player I had will be there if they can. We are looking forward to it.” And also looking forward to coming up in the rankings. Go Falcons!
