Hochul Calls on EPA to Speed 18-Mile Creek Superfund Decision

LOCKPORT, N.Y. – Congresswoman Kathy Hochul today sent a letter to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lisa Jackson requesting she expedite the determination of inclusion of the Eighteen Mile Creek Corridor on the EPA Superfund National Priorities List (NPL).

“After nearly 25 years, the EPA recently proposed adding Eighteen Mile Creek to the Superfund National Priorities List as one of the nation’s most hazardous waste sites,” said Congresswoman Hochul.  “Now, four months after the conclusion of the comment period, it’s time for the EPA to end its review process and finally add Eighteen Mile to the Superfund List.  The people of Lockport have waited long enough for us to clean up this site.”

Lewiston Residents Overwhelmingly Support New Recreation Center

Lewiston Residents Overwhelmingly Support New Recreation Center

In stark contrast to the previous two Village of Lewiston Board meetings, where trustees were blasted for stumping for a new recreation center, residents Monday overwhelmingly voiced their support for a new indoor sports complex.

"It is needed for the kids," said Bruce Blakelock.

His son, eighth-grader Robert Blakelock, said, "There's not a whole lot of areas in Lewiston to go and play sports."

"If we don't accept this for our children ... we're throwing something away," said Dennis Brochey.

"There are a lot of people in the village that are very supportive of (a new recreation center)," Peter Nagy said. "It's a shame that this project is kind of dead in the water."

Breaking: Lewiston Recreation Center Proposal Shelved

Breaking: Lewiston Recreation Center Proposal Shelved

In a surprising turnabout Saturday, the Village of Lewiston has shelved the recreation center proposal. Mayor Terry Collesano spoke with Brian Hall, son of WTS President and CEO Gary Hall, who informed him his father was not moving forward with plans to build a new, multimillion-dollar complex in Lewiston.

On Friday, trustees were confident Hall would change his mind after his son sent an email Thursday indicating Gary was pulling out. A new drawing of the proposed recreation center was created, showing the two-story, 36,000-square-foot building on the Lewiston plateau, instead of behind the Red Brick Municipal Building. Letters in support of a new rec center were collected. There was even some talk that the village would look for other sponsors or donations if Hall did, in fact, withdraw.
