Michael Olear Honored by UB Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership

Michael Olear of the Olear Team at MJ Peterson was honored by the University at Buffalo’s Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership (UB CEL) as their Entrepreneur of the Month for June 2017. UB CEL, part of the UB School of Management, provides an individualized and interactive education in entrepreneurship for business owners. Olear is a 2007 graduate of the program and past chair of the UB CEL Alumni Association. 

As part of his recognition as Entrepreneur of the Month, UB CEL included an interview with Olear in their monthly newsletter, “CEL Happenings.” The interview covered Olear’s beliefs on entrepreneurship, including this quote:

Elizabeth Snyder, owner of Elizabeth Snyder Photography LLC, will take part in a Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce event titled “Shine Bright For Business,” taking place at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 15, at the Lewiston Stone House, 755 Center St., Lewiston.

During this informational session, Snyder and her assistant, Imani Burnett, will discuss the importance of professional headshots and portraits in today’s business world. “A professional headshot is key in connecting you with your clients,” said Snyder. “Please join us for a discussion on why your brand can't afford a ‘selfie.’ We’ll also share some fun stories from the portrait world!”

 AAA WCNY, AT&T & NYS Police Team Up with WNY Officials to Host Distracted Driving Awareness Day

York State Senators Chris Jacobs and Michael Ranzenhofer, AAA Western and Central New York, New York State Police and AT&T teamed up to raise awareness for AAA’s 100 Deadliest Days (the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day when teen crash fatalities historically climb 15 percent compared to the rest of the year), as well as AT&T’s “It Can Wait” public education campaign and NYS distracted driving laws.

Distracted Driving Awareness Day in Western New York was hosted June 1 at AAA WCNY headquarters, where young drivers, parents and all those who visited the Amherst AAA were educated about the dangers of distracted driving.

Daemen Launching State-Approved Applied Behavior Analysis Program

Daemen College has received New York State Department of Education approval to offer a master’s degree in applied behavior analysis (ABA) starting in the fall, making it the only state-approved ABA graduate program in New York.

In addition to the master’s degree, approval has been granted for Daemen to launch a new advanced certificate program to provide ABA post-graduate training for professionals in related fields. “These programs will greatly augment our exceptional academic offerings and prepare highly qualified professionals with the advanced level of skills and training essential for this growing field,” said Dr. Michael Brogan, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college.

“For students, the programs are ideally suited for those looking to further their careers or would like to apply their talents and experience to pursue new opportunities as behavior analysts.”

The statistics are daunting: Falls account for over eight million hospital emergency room visits annually and are the leading cause of workers’ compensation claims. Additionally, floors and flooring materials contribute directly to more than two million fall injuries suffered each year.

In an effort to eliminate slip and fall occurrences — and the potential for expensive lawsuits — many business owners across the country are turning to Sure Step, a non-slip treatment that can be applied to a wide variety of flooring surfaces to help prevent slip and fall incidents.

Niagara County Law Enforcement Academy Graduates 64th Class

The Niagara County Law Enforcement Academy graduated its 64th class during a ceremony held May 10 at Niagara University’s Castellani Art Museum.

FBI Special Agent Jonathan Lacey was the ceremony’s keynote speaker. Lacey, as the crisis manager and training coordinator for the FBI’s Buffalo division, is responsible for ensuring that the FBI is always ready to respond to crisis situations in the Buffalo division’s 17-county territory. The Williamsville native graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Lacey said that, as he drove to Niagara, he was filled with a sense of optimism for the future. He would go on to use the term “promise” to describe what he saw in the 14 men and women seated to his right.

BBB, AT&T, ASIS, U.S. Attorney’s Office and others partner to present free cybersecurity event

According to the National Cyber Security Alliance, 60 percent of small businesses that experience a data breach or a cyber-attack are unable to maintain business. In addition, the average cost to fix an attack or a breach is close to $700,000.

To help educate Western New Yorker’s on how to protect their business from an attack or a breach, Better Business Bureau of Upstate New York, AT&T, American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS) Western New York have partnered with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Crimestoppers, Erie County Law Enforcement Foundation, Lawley, Lincoln Archives to host a free cybersecurity seminar, featuring experts on topics including:

·         Cyber security and your business

·         Securing your mobile device and data

·         Cyber security insurance
