Newfane Student Suspended for Activism

Nicolette Saraf, of Newfane NY, was suspended today from Newfane High School for three days. She was suspended for participating in a nationwide effort to raise awareness for children who have no shoes, going just one day for those who go a lifetime, with no shoes. The TOMS brand is known for donating a new pair of shoes to a child in need for each pair of shoes you purchase. TOMS even has some vegan shoes, of which I am the proud owner. I guess it's like wearing activism on my feet, and today for Nicolette, wearing her activism meant not wearing any shoes. For that, she was suspended for three days. Three days that she will miss class work, assignments, and vital instruction from her teachers.

A better solution, and an idea that would foster students growing desire to make a difference, would have been to have faculty and other students participate in this effort. Perhaps even holding a school wide shoe donation competition, with a reward going to the class that brought in the most usable shoes from all grades. Instead the idea was dismissed and Nicolette was informed by the schools Vice President that if she did participate, she would be suspended, and she was.

Nicolette, with the help of her friend, has also set up a shoe drive for children and adults in Africa. She is asking that people donate their old shoes, those that are not too tattered and worn, so that children and adults can have something that they would not otherwise have. To make donations Nicolette can be contacted at 716- 348-7821 for more info. Nicolette would like to have shoes donated by April 15th. She can also be reached at ettelocinsaraf@yahoo.com
