Niagara Falls Wants Daredevil Wallenda to Pay | News

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) - The city of Niagara Falls, N.Y., says daredevil Nik Wallenda still owes about $25,000 for public safety costs from last month's tightrope walk across the falls, but a Wallenda lawyer says the city's already received more than it should have.

Mayor Paul Dyster says the state legislation that granted permission for the walk required Wallenda to cover security and law enforcement costs. Dyster says the city spent about $43,000, mostly for police and fire overtime. He says it's received $17,500 so far.

Wallenda's attorney, John Bartolomei, says the walk took place on New York state property and that Wallenda has already paid the state $200,000. He says any expenses incurred by the city came from activities staged to try to capitalize on the walk and aren't Wallenda's to bear.
