LOCKPORT, NY - A deputy with the Niagara County Sheriff's office didn't hesitate after receiving a fire call Monday night.
Investigators say they received a call of a fire at an apartment complex at 6594 Dysinger Road around 10:30 Monday night. When he arrived on scene, he rushed in with his fire extinguisher only to find smoke in the hallway. He made sure those inside were out safely before he was driven back by smoke & flames.
Fire crews arrived a short time later and were able to confine the flames to just one apartment. They say it appears to have started in the kitchen area. There was heavy smoke damage throughout.
16 people are being helped by the Red Cross. No cause has been determined yet. Fire officials did not have an estimate on damages to the building.
