Mount St. Mary’s hosts “A Father’s Day Gift of Love and Life”- Prostate Cancer Screening

In celebration of Father’s Day and National Men’s Health Month, the Board of Associates of Mount St. Mary’s Hospital is sponsoring the 13th Annual “A Father’s Day Gift of Love and Life” – a free Prostate Cancer Screening from June 15 - June 20.

The free PSA screening will be held from Monday, June 15 through Friday, June 19 from noon to 5 p.m. and Saturday, June 20 from 7 a.m. to noon in the Outpatient Center in the North Lobby of the Hospital at 5300 Military Road, Lewiston.  The Outpatient Center can be conveniently reached through the North Entrance Driveway off Military Road.

Mount St. Mary’s Hospital receives Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award

Mount St. Mary’s Hospital, a New York State Designated Stroke Center, has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll Elite. The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment and success ensuring that stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.

To receive the Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award, hospitals must achieve 85 percent or higher adherence to all Get With The Guidelines-Stroke achievement indicators for two or more consecutive 12-month periods and achieved 75 percent or higher compliance with five of eight Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Quality measures.

Mount St. Mary's Hospital’s EmStar Emergency Dpt holds annual salute to local EMS personnel

The EmStar Emergency Department of Mount St. Mary’s Hospital will recognize local Emergency Medical Service (EMS) professionals at an awards dinner on Wednesday, May 20 at the Niagara Falls Country Club.  The dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Sponsored by Mount St. Mary's Hospital and Exigence/TeamHealth, the group of physicians that staff the hospital’s EmStar Emergency Department, the dinner is being held in conjunction with the hospital’s recognition of national EMS Week.  Dr. Lloyd Brown, chief of the Department of Emergency Medicine/EmStar, is the organizer of the event to salute EMS excellence.

“As EMS professionals are the first responders on the scene, the initial treatment and care assessment they provide to patients is extremely important and often life-saving,” said Dr. Brown.

Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market to Kick Off 17th Season on Saturday, May 9

 

An enhanced EBT program, three new vendors, talented local entertainers and two Wellness Weekends will highlight the 2015 season at the Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market. The selling season kicks off on Saturday, May 9, and runs through Saturday, Nov. 28. Hours at the open-air venue in Buffalo’s historic Elmwood Village are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine. 

A program of the Elmwood Village Association, the market features more than 40 vendors selling fruits, vegetables, baked goods, organics, fresh meat, cut flowers, wine, craft beer, eggs, dairy, honey, cheese and much more. Products available at the market are always fresh, seasonal and local. New vendors in 2015 include K&B Farm, Kindred Kreek and Niagara Distilling Company.

Two Local Healthcare Agencies to Offer Overdose Recognition and Narcan Training Session

 

To help combat the increasing number of opioid-related overdoses in Western New York, The Resource Training Center (TRTC) is teaming up with Horizon Health Services to offer a free overdose recognition and Narcan administration training session. 

Professional training will be offered to students currently enrolled in The Resource Training Center’s Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) program, and interested community members. Training will be offered beginning at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, at The Resource Training Center, located in the Harlem Road Community Center, 4255 Harlem Road, Amherst. A Narcan kit will be given to attendees who successfully complete the training.

Mount St. Mary’s Hospital celebrates Stroke Month in May

Mount St. Mary’s Hospital, home of Niagara’s Designated Stroke Center, is celebrating Stroke Awareness Month in May with a series of health related events. 

Activities began on May 5 with a presentation by Neurologist Dr. Gregory Sambuchi, head of the Mount St. Mary’s Stroke Team, at the Town of Niagara Senior Center.  The presentation will take place at 12:30 p.m. and is titled, “Stroke Awareness and Risk Factors.” From May 11-15 from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m., Stroke Awareness Week will take place at the hospital and include displays for Stroke Risk, Wellness and Blood Pressure, Exercise and Body Fat, Stroke Rehabilitation, Diabetes and Nutrition, and Smoking Cessation.

Mount St. Mary's Hospital is pleased to announce that it has received another three-year accreditation from The Joint Commission, the nation’s leading organization on hospital accreditation. Mount St. Mary's is the only hospital in Niagara County to have earned the prestigious accreditation.

“This accreditation is a detailed examination and measurement of elements of performance and standards of excellence in the areas of patient safety, quality and leadership, and we are proud to be recognized once again,” said hospital President & CEO Judith A.
