Niagara University Establishes Ostapenko Center For Race, Equality And Mission

Niagara University announced today the creation of a new on-campus center that will advance the institution’s commitment to diversity and social justice.

The Rose Bente Lee Ostapenko Center for Race, Equality and Mission, consistent with Niagara University’s Vincentian mission and interdisciplinary core, will be focused on race and equality, generating and applying research to cultivate exchange among faculty and students; engaging meaningfully with the broader community on initiatives that apply research to action; and integrating issues of race and equality into the teaching/learning environment at Niagara.

Sports Card & Memorabilia Expo to Feature Appearance by Rob Ray

Western New York’s next Sports Card & Memorabilia Expo, the area’s largest biannual sports card and memorabilia show featuring over 100 tables of merchandise, will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, March 26, at the Grapevine Banquet Hall, 333 Dick Road, Depew.

Former Buffalo Sabres great Rob Ray will be on hand to sign autographs at the event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $15 per autograph on any item. 

This show will feature local and out-of-state dealers showcasing vintage as well as newer sports cards and memorabilia, including items from Memorial Auditorium, publications, programs, pennants, autographs, photos, videos, souvenirs and much more. J.M. Bobbing Head Restorations, specializing in paper mache dolls, will also take part in the event; bring in any paper mache dolls needing repair for evaluation.

Niagara University will manage the grant from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation.

Help Me Grow Western New York has been awarded a $1.8 million grant from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation for its continued regional implementation of the comprehensive child development collaborative. Niagara University has been selected to manage the three-year grant.

Sports Collectors Expo to Visit Batavia Downs This Weekend

A huge lineup of professional athletes — including several Hall of Famers and members of the Buffalo Bills, Braves and Sabres — are scheduled to appear at the Sports Collectors Expo Feb. 18 and 19 in Batavia. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Batavia Downs Gaming Center, 8315 Park Road, Batavia.

Scheduled to appear on Saturday, Feb. 18, are:
• 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Denny McLain, Ray Bentley
• 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.: Don Luce, Craig Ramsay
• 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.: Gerry Meehan, Phil Myre, Don Edwards

M&T Free Farmstead Thursdays Coming to Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village

Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village, 3755 Tonawanda Creek Road, Amherst, is honored to announce Free Farmstead Thursdays made possible through funding by M&T Bank. Free Farmstead Thursdays will begin in May of 2017. 

Admission is free for all to enjoy and offers visitors access to:
• Family-friendly educational programming
• Demonstrations by costumed historic interpreters
• Guided tours of the historic village and farmstead 
• 20,000 square feet of curated exhibit space

M&T Bank’s financial support of Free Farmstead Thursdays has made this initiative the first of its kind at Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village. It will ensure that quality, immersive history is accessible to visitors of all ages.   

Fashion Outlets Niagara Falls USA to Host Inaugural Winter Wellness Walk

NIAGARA FALLS, NY (Feb. 7, 2017) ­ - In celebration of American Heart Month, Macerich's Fashion Outlets Niagara Falls USA is hosting the inaugural One Heart One Mile Winter Wellness Walk on Saturday, Feb. 25. With proceeds benefitting the Western New York American Heart Association (WNY AHA), walkers will start at 9:15 a.m. and follow a one-mile path around the mall before enjoying post-event refreshments and entertainment from health-focused vendors.

“Fashion Outlets Niagara Falls USA is proud to support the Buffalo Niagara American Heart Association to raise funds and awareness for our community’s health,” said John Doran, Senior Manager of Macerich’s Fashion Outlets Niagara Falls. “The last Niagara County Heart Walk was in 2005. We’re very excited to bring the tradition back to the County after more than 10 years and rally the community together for a great cause.”

The Elmwood Village Farmers Market will hold its seventh annual poster contest to promote the outdoor market’s upcoming 2017 season. Entries for the poster competition are due by 5 p.m. Friday, March 10. Whether you’re a student studying the arts, a professional graphic designer or just someone with a creative streak, you’re invited to submit your design for an 11x17-inch color poster that accurately reflects the feel of the Elmwood Village Farmers Market, sponsored by the Elmwood Village Association.
