March of Dimes Celebrates Annual Signature Chefs Auction

The March of Dimes, Western New York Division presents the 2010 Signature Chefs Auction, “Feathers & Flair, A March of Dimes Monte Carlo Affair” on Friday, October 8 from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. at the Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel. Western New York’s finest chefs will offer their signature dishes coupled with wine tastings from regional wineries and accompanied by an array of unique live and silent auction items and entertainment. Everyone is invited to attend the evening, which raises money and awareness to save babies from prematurity, birth defects and infant mortality.

This year’s event promises to be an elegant night with some of the best restaurants in town. Featured dishes will be prepared by Alex’s Place, Blue Buffalo, Chef’s Restaurant, Fiamma Steak House, Harry’s Harbour Place Grille, Koi, La Scala, My Tomato Pie, Protocol Restaurant and Rich Renaissance Catering. Wine selections will be offered by Merritt Estate Winery.

Freedom Trail Festival Set for Sept. 18

The history of the Underground Railroad will be celebrated during the 11th annual Freedom Trail Festival. This free event is Saturday, September 18, 2010 from 12:00 – 6:00 p.m. on the grounds of the Niagara Falls Public Library – Main Branch, 1425 Main Street, Niagara Falls.

“The Underground Railroad played an important role in the history of our region,” said David Blackburn, festival organizer. “At this year’s Freedom Trail Festival, art and history combine with music, poetry and dramatic recreations to carry on the legacy of the Underground Railroad in a modern day setting.”

Writing With Light Student Exhibition

Just Buffalo Literary Center and CEPA Gallery are pleased to announce the 3rd Annual Writing With Light Student Exhibition. A celebratory reception will be held on Friday, September 10, 2010 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at CEPA Gallery in the Market Arcade building, 617 Main Street, Buffalo.

Featuring selected works from Just Buffalo & CEPA Gallery’s education programs from the past year, the exhibit will display work from Picturing Poetry, Writer Residencies, and Bookmaking projects.

Writing With Light reached more than 3,500 K-12 students across the region this year, and its emphasis on intensive one-on-one contact between teaching artists and students yields powerful creative results. 

Genevieve DeCarlo, a 3rd grade teacher at Discovery School, P.S. 67 explains, "It was amazing to see the growth of my students... All children should be able to have this awesome learning experience!"

Erie County SPCA Sponsors Paws in the Park Walk

As the SPCA’s longest-running fundraiser, the Paws in the Park Walk presented by Keller Technology Corporation invites people to come with (or without) their dog to a two-mile walk at Beaver Island State Park on Saturday, September 11, at 11 a.m. (Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.)

The day includes lunch for participants and the opportunity to interact with: 50 or more pet-related vendors, exhibitors and canine rescue groups; judged dog trick, costume and dog-owner look-alike contests; an agility course for the dogs; and fun for children and adults alike with inflatable bounce houses. 

Participants are encouraged to raise pledges that directly benefit the people and animals the SPCA assists. In return, these participants win incredible prizes, including airline tickets, messenger bags, and pet first aid kits!

St. George Mediterranean Festival This Weekend

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. - This weekend marks the sixth annual St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church's Mediterranean Festiival.

Enjoy delectabole Mediterranean foods -- including souvlaki, gyros, spanikopita, falafel, taboulee and kibbee -- and St. George's famous homemade pastries. Visit the Kid's Village, Yai and Sittoo's attic, and be sure to stop by the beer tent. Join a tour of the church with its gorgeous new icons.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Heart Center of Niagara Falls Memorial Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital.

St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church is located at 1073 Saunders Settlement Road (Rte. 31). Hours are Friday, August 6, 5 -11 p.m.; Saturday, August 7, 2 - 11 p.m.; and Sunday noon - 6 p.m.
