NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. - A big, first of its kind, breast cancer awareness event is coming to Niagara Falls this month to benefit the American Cancer Society and the Canadian Cancer Society.

Sheriff's Department Conducts 'Community Police Academy'

LOCKPORT, N.Y. -- Sheriff James R. Voutour announces the Sheriff’s Community Police Academy, to be held at the Niagara County Public Safety Building, 5574 Niagara Street Extension, Lockport, New York commencing January 6, 2011 and every Thursday through April 7, 2011 at no cost. Instruction starts at 6:00 p.m. and generally lasts 3 – 4 hours.

Applications can be obtained at www.niagarasheriff.com . If you have questions or need an application mailed to you, please contact Sgt. Smith at the Niagara County Law Enforcement Academy at 716 614-6496 or Deputy Pat Williams at 716 523-0098. You will be notified by mail once you are accepted into the program. You must be at least 20 years of age, reside or work within Niagara County and have no prior felony convictions or outstanding warrants.

Due to a limit in class size, it is possible that not all applicants will be accepted. Further details will be provided with your acceptance letter.

Old Fort Niagara's Haunted Fortress

As the leaves change their colors and the temperatures begin to drop, the spirits return to Old Fort Niagara for the annual Haunted Fortress. For two nights only experience the dark side of Fort Niagara as ghosts and ghouls from the past walk among the historic buildings on Saturday, October 16 and Saturday, October 23.

Tickets are $12 per person and available by pre-sale only with credit card. Reservations can be made daily between 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. by calling 716-745-7611. Bring a flashlight, dress for the weather and wear sensible footwear. The Haunted Fortress is not recommended for children under 8 years old.

Aquarium of Niagara Seeking Online Votes to Secure $50,000 Grant

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. -- The Aquarium of Niagara is still in the running for a $50,000.00 grant from Pepsi to fund a new coral reef exhibit. The grant is awarded via an online voting system in which the public can vote for the ideas they think are the best.

The planned exhibit will include an 800-gallon living coral reef, complete with an array of colorful corals and marine fish. The primary focus of the exhibit will be to educate the public about the importance of coral reefs, why they need protection and what can be done to help ensure their survival. A large screen LCD TV, two smaller digital screens, along with other interesting graphics, will bring this message across.

Niagara Falls Goes "Pink" for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The Buffalo Bills and local Breast Cancer Survivors along with the Western New York Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Kaleida Health, Delaware North Companies and Zeta Tau Alpha all gathered together in Niagara Falls, Ontario to “light the Falls pink” as part of the Billieve breast cancer awareness program.  Special guests at the Falls lighting included, Buffalo Bills running back Fred Jackson and wife Danielle, defensive tackle Kyle Williams and wife Jill and safety Bryan Scott and wife Quiana.

One out of eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. The Billieve campaign was designed as an awareness program to support Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s mission to save lives through early detection and to ultimately end breast cancer forever.

A Night to Shine: Help Discover a Cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Hauptman Woodward Medical Research Institute is known throughout the World for discovering medical breakthroughs in genetic research, making it the ideal venue for the 2010 A Night to Shine, Come Out and See the Stars charity gala. 

The event will be hosted by Suneel’s Light, a local non-profit foundation with the sole mission of raising funds for genetic research that will lead to the cure of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), while increasing public awareness of the genetic disease. A Night to Shine, formerly known as Tailgate for a Cure, is the Foundation’s major fundraiser of the year and will “shine brightly upon” the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus on Thursday, October 14th from 5:30 pm – 9 pm at the Hauptman Woodward Life Science Building 700 Ellicott Street, Buffalo NY.  

Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center to Conduct Flu Shot Clinics in October

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. -- Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center will conduct Saturday flu shot clinics for adults 18 and older from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 2, Oct. 16 and Nov. 6.  The clinics will be held in the Medical Center Auditorium, 621 10th Street. 

This year’s influenza vaccine protects against the new H3N2 influenza strain, last year’s swine flu, part of the H1N1 family, and a Type B strain -- all in a single dose. Pneumonia vaccine also will be available at the clinics. 

Those seeking flu shots should use the hospital’s 10th Street entrance or the walkway from the attached parking ramp, where free parking will be provided. In order to expedite the inoculation process, please wear a short-sleeved shirt or top.
