Lewiston GardenFest set for June 22 & 23

Take the historic village of Lewiston, add a love of gardening and you have the 8th annual Lewiston GardenFest sponsored by the Lewiston Garden Club. The event is Saturday, June 22 and Sunday, June 23 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. both days. Located along Center Street, the festival includes a free garden walk featuring the gardens of local Lewiston residents and vendors selling flowers, plants, garden art and more to beautify one’s outdoor space. In addition master gardeners and representatives from floral societies will offer presentations and opportunities to answer all of your gardening questions.

“The Lewiston GardenFest offers something for all levels of gardeners from the master gardener to the casual gardener to those who may be looking for ideas on how to tackle plantings around their home,” said Barbara Landree, event chair. “In addition, this event is also one of the Lewiston Garden Club’s major fundraisers with all proceeds given back to the local Lewiston community for civic beautification and scholarships.”

Several Lewiston residents will be showcasing their private gardens and opening them up to the general public. Join the free garden walk and view nine public and private gardens on Saturday and eight on Sunday, varying in size and style, located both within walking distance and also a short drive from Center Street. A complete listing of participating gardens will be available during the event at one of the Lewiston GardenFest hospitality booths.

A Garden Talk is also scheduled for each day of the event.  On Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at The Brickyard (432 Center Street), Lyn Chimera, owner and founder of “Lessons from Nature” will speak on “Sustainable Gardening for the Home Gardener.” Sally Cunningham, Certified Nursery & Landscape Professional, newspaper columnist and media personality, will present “Ecological Landscaping: What we can do in our yards and gardens is very important to Mother Nature” on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at the Lewiston Fire Company No. 1 Hall (North 6th Street).

Looking for an answer to a specific plant or garden problem? Representatives from Cornell Cooperative Extension, the Hosta & Daylily Society, and the Iris Society will be available to answer your gardening questions throughout the weekend.

Or for those who may be hesitant to create a large garden or just don’t have the space, put your green thumb to the test and participate in the Container Garden Contest. Bring your special garden in a planter or any type of container, along with a stand for display, to the hospitality booth at 4th and Center Streets by 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 22.  Be creative - even found objects make the most interesting containers and don’t forget fun accessories! Festivalgoers will be able to vote for their favorites throughout the weekend and prizes will be awarded to the top vote-getters. For tips and examples, visit lewistongardenfest.com.
