Kenan Center To Celebrate 50 Years Sixties-Style

The Kenan Center in Lockport is planning a sixties-style wrap-up to the summer to mark its 50th anniversary, and it’s shaping up to be the “party of parties.” The event called “Kenan’s Summer Shindig – Celebrating 50 Years” will take place Saturday, August 26 from 7:00-10:00 p.m. in the Kenan house and gardens at 433 Locust Street. The casual event will feature food from 80 Main and Lock 34, wine and beer, live music by Off the Cuff, plus a photo booth and silent auction.

Chairs of the event, Maggie Hagenbach, Rosemary Stritzel, and Chris Marra, along with their committee members, decided to make this year’s annual gala a more relaxed and casual affair that would appeal to patrons. The sixties theme is connected to 1967, the year in which the Kenan Center was officially founded, and is being woven into the décor with vivid 60s-era colors and accoutrements.  Guests are encouraged to get in the spirit by donning their favorite bell bottoms, peasant dresses, and tie-dye shirts, whether vintage from their own closets or “new vintage” designs.

“In this year filled with nostalgia, the Summer Shindig is a way for the community to reminisce about the early days of the Kenan Center,” said Board President Selena Truax Morello. “Whether those memories are of their parents who volunteered, coached, and served as leaders of the institution, or of those who grew up playing, learning, and engaging in the arts at this one-of-a-kind community center.”  Morello, who has also served for the past year as co-chair of the Kenan Center’s 50th Anniversary celebration, added that the Summer Shindig is “certain to be a celebratory event with great food, music, and support from Kenan Center patrons.”

Kenan Center Executive Director, Susan Przybyl concurs and said the Summer Shindig is both a trip down memory lane, and a celebration of the Center’s success.  “We’re taking a look back to the 1960’s when Kenan Center was established, and reveling in 2017 and our community accomplishments together.  We are looking back with pride and ahead with promise!”

Tickets are $75 each and can be purchased in person at the Kenan Center Business Office, 433 Locust Street, or by calling 433-2617. Proceeds go to the Linda Taylor Memorial Scholarship Fund benefitting children in need. For more information, go to kenancenter.org or call 433-2617.
