Lifesaving Tips from the Firemen’s Association of the State of NY…

With Memorial Day weekend right around the corner, many people will be hosting backyard barbecues. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) is reminding residents to follow important fire safety tips so that they can enjoy a safe summer season.

“The outdoor cookout season will soon be in full swing.  Unfortunately, a barbecue grill could start a fire if certain safety rules are ignored,” said Firemen’s Association of the State of New York President David Jacobowitz.  “It’s important to position the grill far away from siding, deck railings, trees and other flammables. When gatherings involve children, it’s critical that a child-free zone of at least three feet is established around the grill.”

Five in a Row: NU Again Named to Honor Roll for Community Service

For the fifth consecutive year, Niagara University has been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service to the community. The honor roll, established in 2006 by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.

In addition, Niagara is one of only three institutions of higher learning in New York state –with New York University and Syracuse University – to have received the “Honor Roll With Distinction” designation four times since its inception.

And for the second straight year, Niagara University is ranked among the country's most environmentally responsible colleges, according to The Princeton Review. The well-known education and test-prep service company has once again partnered with the U.S. Green Building Council to release the second annual edition of a free guidebook that recognizes the nation's “greenest” colleges.

The Princeton Review's Guide to 311 Green Colleges: 2011 Edition profiles 308 higher-education institutions in the United States and three in Canada that demonstrate notable commitments to sustainability in their academic offerings, campus infrastructure, activities and career preparation.

Where 2 Fish: Rain Hampering the Action

First Class Bass Charters Lake Erie Fishing Report

  • Water temperature: 48-49  degrees
  • Smallmouth bass action has slowed down with the rain and high winds over the past week. The key to catching fish is finding clear water.
  • The Hamburg shoreline has been your best bet.
  • Tube jigs and live bait have been performing best.
  • Perch fishing is still spotty; hit or miss.
  • Walleye fishing slowed way down with the muddy water close to shore.
  • Look for fishing to pick up after rain slows down.
