County, State Leaders Win $200K For Brownfields Rehab

A Statement Released by Niagara County

SANBORN—Niagara County’s brownfields will have an additional $200,000 available for rehabilitation loans after county and state leaders were notified by the EPA that they had succeeded in securing additional funding for the county’s successful brownfields revitalization efforts.

The news came in a letter from the Environmental Protection Agency, which stated in part that the EPA was “pleased to see the progress Niagara County has made, and wish you continued success.”

The funds will be made available for brownfields revitalization through the county’s Brownfields Cleanup Revolving Loan Fund.

The EPA funds are the latest windfall for Niagara County’s efforts to rehabilitate sites contaminated by pollutants, and follow a number of high-profile clean-up efforts by the county in recent years, including several former industrial and military sites in the city of Lockport, Cambria, and Niagara Falls.

Olcott Beach Reels in Title of "Ultimate Fishing Town"

Olcott Beach may be considered small by population standards, but the area showed they don't think or act that way. Thanks to over 130,000 votes placed, Olcott Beach, N.Y., has achieved the title of "Ultimate Fishing Town" from the World Fishing Network (WFN). Official verification will come on June 6.

Over 100 people came to celebrate the fete at the Town of Newfane community center on May 31, 2012. They were joined, via Skype, by Hastings, Ont. That community and Newfane-Olcott Beach came together to assist in voting. Hastings achieved the Ultimate Fishing Town title held in Canada by WFN.

A true bi-national effort that proved when communities work together, big things can happen.
