President and CEO of Tourism Agency Named Chair of ABA Event

John Percy, president and CEO of the Niagara Tourism and Convention Corporation (NTCC), will be chairman of the 2011 American Bus Association (ABA) Marketplace in Philadelphia, January 8-12.

As chairman, Percy will head ABA’s Marketplace, a business event for the group travel industry, which allows group travel buyers and sellers to meet face-to-face in pre-scheduled appointments. In addition to the in-person appointments, Marketplace offers professional education seminars and numerous networking opportunities.

“It is an honor and privilege to have been selected by ABA to serve in this capacity and I look forward to being a part of the premier event for the tourism industry,” said Percy, who has been a member of the organization for 22 years.

Lockport YMCA to Host Annual SUNY Coaching Certification

Lockport, N.Y. – The Lockport YMCA is hosting a SUNY Youth Sports Institute Coaching Certification Course on Wednesday, January 19th.  The upcoming course will be the second SUNY Coaching Certification held with the Lockport YMCA since January 2010.   

The class is scheduled to begin at 6:30pm at the Lockport YMCA on East Avenue, and will last approximately 3 hours.  The course is open to all who are interested within the Lockport community.  John Strong will be the SUNY Youth Sports Institute Instructor teaching the Wednesday evening course.

Swiss Junior Hockey Team Takes on Niagara Falls

Approximately 40 junior hockey players from Switzerland and their coaching staff toured the Niagara Falls State Park on Wednesday, giving them some much needed relaxation and an icy view of a world renowned attraction.

The players visited the observation tower, caught an up-close view of Niagara Falls from Prospect Point, and were able to tour the park at their leisure.

The Swiss junior hockey team is in the Buffalo and Niagara areas until Tuesday for the World Junior Hockey Championships.

Local Nonprofits Can Drive Away in New Ford Van

The Ford Dealers of Western New York recently announced that applications are now available for the annual Ford Friendship Express program. Local nonprofits looking to drive away in a brand new Ford van must apply by March 1, 2011. Van recipients will be announced in the spring of 2011. 

Now in its 16th year, the program has already awarded 62 vans valued at more than $1 million… driving area nonprofits 1.2 million miles and counting. Organizations within the following counties are eligible to apply: Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany, McKean and Potter counties.

From the hundred or so entries we received, our judges have selected 13 finalists – one from each participating WGRZ '2 Your Town' community. Now it’s up to you to pick the overall Grand Prize Winner.

Each of the finalists receives a $25 gift certificate to Wegmans. The Grand Prize Winner will be awarded a $100 gift certificate to Target, to go out and buy even more lights for next year’s contest! The Grand Prize Winner will be announced on Monday, January 3.

 

WGRZ '2 Your Town' Holiday Display Winner

BUFFALO, NY - WGRZ's '2 Your Town' is pleased to announce Ken Boris of 170 Pierce Avenue in Hamburg, NY as our 2010 Holiday Lights and Display Contest Winner.

This year's winner came to us courtesy of our Hamburg community website and beat out 13 other finalists for the top prize, a $100 gift certificate to Target.

ElderWood Senior Care Delivers Clothing for  Salvation Army Drive

BUFFALO, NY – ElderWood Senior Care wrapped up its second annual “Warm Hands, Warm Hearts” community-wide winter clothing drive today by donating 18, 55-gallon barrels full of clothing to the Salvation Army-Buffalo Area Services.

From Nov. 30 until Dec. 21, Salvation Army collection bins were available in the lobbies of all 18 ElderWood residential locations across Western and Central New York. ElderWood residences also hosted a number of community events that encouraged residents and the local community to participate in the “Warm Hands, Warm Hearts” program.
