Lee Congratulates Williamsville Student Maria Manna on Acceptance to the U.S. Military Academy

WILLIAMSVILLE – Congressman Chris Lee (NY-26) congratulated Maria Manna of Williamsville on receiving an Offer of Appointment to the United States Military Academy as a member of the class of 2015. Manna also received a letter of recommendation from Congressman Lee to the United States Air Force Academy.

“I’d like to congratulate Maria on receiving an appointment to West Point, and know that she will make an outstanding officer,” said Congressman Lee. “Maria is a strong and dedicated young woman and she will serve her country well. I was proud to recommend Maria to attend both the U.S. Military Academy and the Air Force Academy and wish her much success.”

The Niagara Wheatfield Central School District is offering a district-wide pre-kindergarten program for the 2011-2012 school year.  Resident children who will be 4 years old by December 1 are eligible to be considered for the program.  Applications may be obtained at the District Office, 6700 Schultz Street, Niagara Falls, NY 14304.  The deadline is February 16, 2011.

Niagara Catholic Students Gain Hands-on Career Experience at Mount St. Mary's Hospital

The “Pathways to Careers” Program was initiated by Mount St. Mary’s Hospital in collaboration with Niagara Catholic High School and Niagara University, to provide unique opportunities for high school students to plan for careers in health and health-related fields.  The program was initiated in June, 2010 with a Career Fair where 12 hospital departments provided exhibits on specific health careers which support acute care operations.  Students were encouraged to visit each exhibit and pick up information about careers, certification and licensure requirements and local institutions of higher learning which offer courses of study in specific career programs.  Students were also given the opportunity to sign up for an internship opportunity starting September 2010.

Kenan Center Kicks-Off New Soccer Turf and Expanded Rec Space

The Kenan Center in Lockport celebrated a milestone in the expansion of its recreational facilities on Thursday, Janaury 27, with a ceremonial group soccer shot that broke down a blue and gold ribbon banner in celebration of the new soccer turf and completed renovation of the Arena Annex.

Among the dignitaries present at the ceremony were Lockport Mayor Michael Tucker, William B. May, executive director of the Grigg-Lewis Foundation; Nancy Lange, president of the Lockport Rotary Club; Kathy Greenfield, president of the Kenan Arts Council; and John Moskalik, president of the Lions Club. Also present to give remarks were Susan Przybyl, Kenan Center Executive Director; Donna Lanham, board of governors president; Al Franco, Sports & Recreation Committee co-chair; and Rick Ruhmel, Sports & Recreation Manager. More than 200 players and parents joined the festivities and watched members of the Lockport Soccer Club in a scrimmage.

Catholic Charities’ Western Niagara County Volunteers Gather for 2011 Appeal Workshop/ Luncheon

NIAGARA FALLS, NY – The 2011 Appeal for Catholic Charities is set to kick off Saturday, January 22nd at 11:00 am with a volunteer training workshop and luncheon.

Held at Antonio’s Restaurant and Banquet Center on 7708 Niagara Falls Blvd, this event marks the beginning of the preparations for this year’s appeal which carries a goal of $10.5 million.

In western Niagara County last year alone, more than 10,800 individuals turned to the organization for assistance.

The official Appeal Week will take place April 10 - April 17 throughout the eight counties of Western New York.

Funds raised will help support more than 70 programs and services offered by Catholic Charities for families in the eight counties of Western New York.

This is the first of two Niagara County workshops. The next will be held Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 5:30 p.m. at the Tuscarora Inn in Lockport.

NIAGARA FALLS, NY – Niagara Metals’ first-ever “Customer and Community Appreciation Days” will be highlighted at its Niagara Falls location on Monday, January 24 when the scrap metal dealer serves free Chiavetta’s chicken dinners to the first 300 attendees and presents two charitable donations, each for $5,000, to Family & Children’s Service of Niagara, and to Heart, Love and Soul, Inc. Food Pantry and Dining Room. 

A similar program was held on January 17 at the company’s Royalton location, where the company presented a check for $5,000, to Mercy Flight of WNY.

Purchase Bouquets for Hospice Patients & Veterans

NIAGARA FALLS, NY - The Niagara Hospice Alliance is pleased to announce the return of the Annual Spring Bouquet Sale. The sale will run from February 28th through March 5th with pre-sale bouquet orders being taken now.

Proceeds from the sale help support the mission of Niagara Hospice to provide the right care, in the right place, at the right time. In the spirit of the agency’s focus on patient care and the We Honor Veterans initiative, Niagara Hospice is offering a unique opportunity to donate purchased bouquets. For a gift of $16 Niagara Hospice will deliver two bouquets on the purchaser’s behalf - one to a current Niagara Hospice patient and one to a Niagara County veteran.

Bouquets will be sold during the week of February 28th through March 5th at businesses around Niagara County.
