NCIDA Approves Safety Valve for Pilot Modification for AES Eastern Energy

SANBORN, NEW YORK – The Niagara County Industrial Development Agency (NCIDA) Board of Directors today approved a modification to AES Eastern Energy’s current Payment In Lieu of Tax (PILOT).  The modification was approved to provide stability to the largest tax payer in Niagara County which is experiencing difficult economic times in the energy industry.  A stipulation of the PILOT modification entails that if market conditions in the energy sector return to 2009 levels that the modified PILOT payments also would return to the original amounts, providing a safety valve for both the company and the taxing jurisdictions.

Niagara University Again Offers Free Tax Preparation Assistance

Continuing a tradition that has become nearly as inevitable as taxes themselves, accounting students from Niagara University's College of Business Administration will again provide free tax preparation assistance to members of the Niagara Falls community this tax season.

Sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service, the program, called Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), is entering its 30th year at Niagara. Under the program, NU students prepare and electronically file federal and state tax returns free of charge for elderly and low-income taxpayers in the community. The program is coordinated by members of Beta Alpha Psi, the international honor society for accounting, and the college's Accounting Society.

“VITA is yet another way that Niagara University strives to provide a meaningful service to its fellow community members, especially the less fortunate,” said Alfonso Oddo, a professor of accounting at the university.
