Lockport Artist Joe Whalen Reads Tribute to Artist Ollie McConnell

Lockport artist Joe Whalen offered a poignant tribute to late artist Olivia "Ollie" McConnell during a "Tea and Shared Memories," event held at the Kenan Center House Gallery on January 23, attended by more than 30 past students and friends of the artist who passed away in 1984. The event was part of a retrospective exhibit of McConnell works currently taking place through February 3. The reading was penned by a critic in 1897 about an artist of the time. Niagara Wine Trail Announces 2011 Events

The Niagara Wine Trail opened its 2011 slate of events today with "Warm Your Winter With Wine."

Participating wineries, in Niagara and Orleans counties, will have tastings of wine plus a special featured wine from noon to 6 p.m. today, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. All wine purchases will be 20 percent off for participants at each winery, and participants will receive a commemorative glass at their starting wineries. Participants may enter to win a wine basket that that includes a bottle of the featured wine from each participating winery with a recipe on how to prepare the wine at home.

"They Kept Their Word": An Exhibit on Historical African American Women's Literary Societies

The Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society presents an exhibit delving into the rich and influential history of African American Women’s Literary Societies in the Buffalo region. “They Kept Their Word: African American Women's Literary Societies and Their Legacy” opens with a reception on Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011 at 2 p.m.

This opening reception coincides with a Martin Luther King program at the Historical Society, sponsored by the Afro American Historical Association of the Niagara Frontier, which will take place at 3 p.m. on the same day. ("African Americans, the Civil War & Martin Luther King's Legacy" is the theme of the MLK program; speaker Harry Matthews Bradshaw will offer a talk on the subject.)

Open Auditions for Arsenic & Old Lace

Theatre in the Mist, the award-winning community theater group based in Lewiston, NY has announced audition dates for its upcoming performance of Arsenic and Old Lace. Auditions will be held Wednesday, January 12, and Thursday, January 13 from 7:00pm-9:00pm at the Stella Niagara Theater.
