WWII gunner’s diary subject of new book and program

The Erie Canal Discovery Center is pleased to welcome local author Barbara Haney-Jones who will share information about her newly published work, “A War Diary from Aboard the USS Swearer: Memories of a Gunner, 1943-1945.” This free public program and book signing will take place at the Discovery Center, 24 Church Street in Lockport, at 11 am on Saturday, May 19.

This book is a diary written by a gunner by the name of Tony Tererameo, Sr., when he was aboard the USS Swearer (DE-186), a Cannon Class destroyer escort launched on October 31, 1943 that took part in WWII in the Pacific. The words of the diary have not been changed but background and explanations of entries in the diary have been added. The diary begins with Tony’s induction into the Navy and takes the reader into the Pacific as Swearer served in a task unit escorting the oilers that refueled the Pacific Fleet which helped to liberate the Japanese held islands.

While off Okinawa, Swearer endured kamikaze attacks on a daily basis. Footnotes have been added to the book to give context to what is written in the diary. Where possible, Haney-Jones has provided information on other ships in the task unit as well as those ships that Swearer came into contact with. Ships listed are also found alphabetically in the index.

Barbara Haney-Jones, a prolific author, received master’s degrees from the University of Akron, Ohio and her PhD from the University of Wales in Cardiff, UK.  Previous works include “The Restructuring of Scholarly Publishing in the United States” and “The Role the USS Casablanca Played in WWII in the Pacific.”

Haney-Jones will present her program at the Erie Canal Discovery Center on Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 19th at 11 a.m. Books are available locally at the Discovery Center, 24 Church Street and The History Center, 215 Niagara Street.
