Lockport's Malt Shop Memories

Step back in time at the Erie Canal Discovery Center for a great spring event entitled, “Malt Shop Memories."  Be sure to set aside Saturday, March 24 from 1-3 p.m.to take a stroll down memory lane and reminisce about the heyday of Lockport’s ice cream shop era. Many folks who were around in the 1940s and 50s still remember their afterschool trips to Lockport’s purveyors of frozen delicacies, soda shops like The Crystal, The Royal, Castle’s and Randleigh Farms.  Chances are most folks enjoyed a favorite “hang out” that became their home-away-from-home as a youth.

The Discovery Center has created a special exhibit for “Malt Shop Memories,” that includes glassware, photo's and even a table from the Crystal.  Those who attend should enjoy a good old fashioned Ice Cream Social, complete with delicious ice cream prepared by Lake Effect and some great 50’s music spun by Rick Heenan .  Go ahead and dig into your closet and try to find some remnants of clothing that would have been popular during the soda shop era, too. Perhaps you still have a poodle skirt or saddleback shoes, whatever you can find to add to the fun and excitement.  Prizes will be awarded for best costumes and everyone should come expecting a good time.
