Kenan Center Named Finalist for Arts Award | Arts & Culture
The Kenan Center in Lockport has been selected as one of three finalists for this year’s Spark Awards “Organization of the Year.” The fourth annual awards are presented by Arts Services Initiative serving Erie, Niagara, Allegany, Cattaraugus, and Chautauqua counties. The other two finalists are the Springville Center for the Arts and Fredonia Opera House. Past recipients of the award are Just Buffalo Literary Center (2016), the Niagara Arts & Cultural Center (2015), and Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (2014).
The selection as a finalist comes during the Center’s 50th anniversary year, and lends recognition to the regional impact the Center has had over the past five decades, especially in making the arts accessible to the community through the Kenan House Gallery, offering hands-on art classes for children and adults, hosting 100 American Craftsmen, one of the region’s most noted shows of contemporary, fine craft art, and presenting innovative theater and musical performances in the Taylor Theater. This year is especially momentous as the Kenan Center Gallery will present an historic exhibit — “Three Generations of Burchfields: Works from the Schoene Collection” (April 30-June 16), on the 51st anniversary date of its first exhibit of Charles Burchfield work in 1966.
The winner of the top award will be announced at an awards presentation on May 10 at the new Hotel Henry in Buffalo.
