Kenan Center Event to Celebrate Completion of Arena Capital Projects

This month the Kenan Center in Lockport will celebrate a milestone in its plans to expand and upgrade the recreational facilities of the Kenan Center Arena. A new soccer turf has been installed and will be officially unveiled at a ribbon-cutting event on Thursday, January 27 beginning at 6:00 p.m. Opening remarks will be followed by a team practice for the five to eight-year-olds and scrimmage games by the Lockport Soccer Club.

The original artificial turf was purchased in the mid-90s, and the Kenan Center established at that time a depreciation fund for the eventual replacement of the turf. Revenues from candy selling efforts by the players and the Kenan Soccer Committee helped to build the fund. Larger donations were provided by area funders to reach the final goals.  Funders include the Grigg-Lewis Foundation, Kenan Arts Council, Rotary Club of Lockport, and Lockport Lions Club.

The Kenan Arena was opened in December, 1969 and began its youth soccer program in the early 1980s. An average of 1,000 youth and adults participate annually in fall, winter and summer youth soccer leagues as well as clinics that are held for four and five-year-olds and adult soccer leagues.

The new turf is part of a larger arena capital project which included renovation of the arena Annex. This area, on the east side of the arena complex, which had been divided into classrooms, was gutted last summer, opening up a 5,800 square foot space that will be used for additional recreational activities as well as events. The winter youth soccer league is already scheduled to begin using the Annex for practices, and visitors will be able to see the Annex space in use on the night of the turf unveiling. Additional fundraising continues to add amenities and equipment. The combined cost of the turf replacement and Annex renovation is estimated to be $106,000.

The completion of these Arena projects are grounded in the Kenan Center’s mission to serve as a regional community center with programs and events in arts, education and recreation. Susan Przybyl, Executive Director of the Kenan Center made this statement about the completion of these long-awaited improvements:  “With a brand new turf in the Arena and a renovated Arena annex, we now offer improved venues with more space for recreation practices and games, as well as events.  These new improvements ultimately permit the Kenan Center to provide enhanced programming especially for our children, giving them more opportunities to be healthy kids and better citizens through team sports and fair play.  We are just so happy to offer the community better facilities.”

The Kenan Center Arena is located at 195 Beattie Avenue. The public is invited to take part in the unveiling and view the renovated Annex.
