ESD and Niagara County IDA assistance enable Edwards to invest $1.5 million, retaining and creating jobs in the vacuum and abatement manufacturing and service industry

SANBORN, NEW YORK – Edwards and the Niagara County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) today announced that Edwards, a leading technology company headquartered in the United Kingdom, will consolidate its East Cost United States operations in Niagara County in order to improve the company’s operational efficiencies.  Edwards, which has maintained regional manufacturing and distribution facilities in the greater Buffalo area for more than 50 years, will invest $1.5 million, in addition to a long-term lease agreement worth more than $2 million.  Ninety permanent, full-time jobs will be retained, as well as 28 new jobs created in the State of New York.

New York State and IDA offered an incentive package to the company that will enable Edwards’ U.S. operation to remain competitive with the company’s overseas operations.  Edwards supplies vacuum and abatement products used in the manufacture of semiconductors, solar panels, LEDs, scientific instruments and a wide range of industrial products.

“We are proud to partner with ESD and Niagara County on this exciting initiative,” said Edwards Chief Operating Officer Ron Krisanda.  “The U.S. market is strategic to Edward’s growth initiatives, and this project is a key part of our strategy of retaining closeness to our customers.  We are building upon our talented and dedicated employee base in the region, and strengthening the organization in the US to build a platform for growth.  Our current facility has great engineering, systemization capability, and technical skill sets.  Edwards has a diverse technology base that touches solar, life sciences, power, and semiconductor, all key growth areas in the US.  Edwards has an outstanding safety record and environmental record and a good reputation in the community that we look to strengthen even further with this investment.”

“Empire State Development is focused on the growth and expansion of the high-tech jobs of tomorrow, while continuing to support the manufacturing sector that remains the backbone of our economy,” said ESD Chairman & CEO Dennis M. Mullen.  “As Edwards is a leading supplier to the world’s most advanced industries and the world leader in vacuum and abatement equipment, Governor Paterson and I are pleased that the company chose New York State for its U.S. headquarters.  The project will position Edwards as a key supplier for semiconductor companies in the state, growing in concert with our expanding semiconductor manufacturing base while providing jobs and investment in New York State.”

“On behalf of the entire community, we are delighted that Edwards will be calling Niagara County its permanent home for the company’s United States operations,” Henry M. Sloma, chairman, Niagara County Industrial Development Agency said.  “We believe the decision by Edwards reinforces all of the positive attributes of doing business in our county – a highly skilled and well trained workforce, an excellent transportation infrastructure that provides easy access to the marketplace and quality manufacturing facilities – when combined will help Edwards to grow and prosper.”

The project will involve construction/build-out of the leased facility for manufacturing operations; purchase and installation of new machinery and equipment; training costs; and relocation expenses.  Consolidated operations will also facilitate further expansion in the Buffalo area to include finance, customer care and R&D job opportunities. This project consolidates three regional facilities that currently reside in New York and Massachusetts, and will reinforce Edwards’ commitment to exemplary customer satisfaction, cost effective quality products and world class on time delivery.

Edwards is a leading global supplier of integrated solutions for the manufacture of semiconductors, flat panel displays, LEDs and solar cells and a leader in vacuum technology for industrial, scientific, process and R&D applications. The company employs approximately 3,000 people worldwide in the design, manufacture and support of high technology vacuum and exhaust management equipment. Edwards invented the concept of the low-maintenance, cost-effective, commercial oil-free ‘dry’ vacuum pump and offers a wide range of other pumping technologies, and related products, supported by an international sales and service organization.
