Vincent Davis II presents a personal reflection on Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech from the perspective of a young man of color and a member of Generation X, January 15 at 1:00 p.m. in the Kenan Center Taylor Theater, 433 Locust St, Lockport. Reception to follow. Appropriate for children in Intermediate through High School grades. Davis is a native of Lockport and a former member of the Kenan Center Board of Governors. He is a graduate of Cornell University.

Daemen’s Sustainability Program Ranked No. 1 Among Small Colleges

Daemen College’s unique Global and Local Sustainability Program has earned the top ranking in the nation among the “Best Value Small Colleges for an Environmental Science Degree,” making it the only Western New York college to be named to the list.

The 2017 ranking has been announced by Best Value Small Colleges, an online guide to the best values in college education in the country.

“We are proud to have this exceptional degree program ranked the best in the nation and to be recognized for offering a high-quality education at an affordable cost to our students,” said Daemen President Gary A. Olson. “This top honor truly reflects the program’s academic excellence in preparing students to foster the social, environmental, and economic well-being of our communities.”

Audubon Community Nature Center Planning 35th Annual Snowflake Sustainable Living Festival

Jamestown, NY – Audubon Community Nature Center is planning for its 35th Annual Snowflake Sustainable Living Festival to be the best yet.

Magic Moments horse-drawn Carriage Rides, Wild Spirit Education programs with owls and hawks, alpacas from Dun Roving Farms, Chautauqua County Humane Society, and Tails of the Tundra Siberian Husky Rescue are some of the animal experiences being lined up.

The Festival’s emphasis on sustainability means visitors can learn about and experience ways to live a bit lighter on the planet. Opportunities are being planned for bird nest box and feeder building, butter making, soap making, wool spinning, knitting, leather working, wheat grinding, maple tapping and syrup making.

Also indoors will be children’s crafts, a basket raffle, door prizes, great shopping at the Blue Heron Gift Shop, and the opportunity to win a handmade 100% repurposed braided wool rug in the feature raffle.

Christ the King School in Snyder Plans Annual Open House Event

Christ the King School, where quality education and faith are long-standing traditions, will host an open house event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, during Catholic Schools Week. The school is conveniently located at Main Street and Lamarck Drive in Snyder.

Christ the King, offering Pre-K3, Pre-K4, kindergarten and grades one through eight, provides students with a challenging curriculum that meets and exceeds New York State learning standards. Guests who tour the STREAM-designated school will learn about Christ the King’s art, music, computer, physical education and foreign language classes; clubs and extracurricular activities; safe and disciplined environment; educational field trips; Academic Intervention Services and much more! 

Visitors will also have an opportunity to meet Principal Samuel Zalacca, as well as the school’s teachers and staff.

Five WNY Women Artists Featured in Exhibit

The Kenan Center kicks off its 50th Anniversary celebration with its first exhibit of the new year honoring Alice Pomroy Kenan, wife of William R. Kenan, Jr., a wealthy Lockport businessman and philanthropist who left his 25-acre estate to be developed as a community center. Titled, “Celebrating Alice Pomroy Kenan: Women Artists of Western New York,” the exhibit will feature work by five women artists: Barbara Fox, Kathleen Giles, Kathleen McDonnell, Coni Minneci, and Jody Ziehm. The exhibit opens January 8 with a public reception from 2:00-5:00 p.m. in the Kenan House Gallery, 433 Locust St, Lockport.

Daemen Ranked in Top 10 Nationally for Biology Degree

AMHERST, N.Y. -- Daemen College has been ranked among the top 10 in the nation on the “35 Best Value Small Colleges for a Biology Degree” list released by Best Value Schools, an online guide to the best values in college education in the country.

“We are honored to be recognized as one of the top institutions in the nation for a degree in the field of biology,” said Daemen President Gary A. Olson. “Our academic excellence, educational value, and many learning opportunities truly make a Daemen education an outstanding experience for our students.”

On the 2017 list, Daemen is ranked No. 7 among small schools in the U.S. that offer a bachelor’s degree in biology or a related area. The college was specifically cited for its unique bachelor’s degree in biology/master’s degree in cytotechnology program offered in partnership with Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
